Current portray by Böcklin depicts the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse who’re the forces of man’s destruction described within the Bible within the chapter six of the E-book of Revelation.
The composition relies on Albrecht Dürer’s well-known woodcut from 1497–98.
The 4 horsemen are historically named after the powers they characterize: Warfare, Famine, Pestilence and Loss of life; solely Loss of life, nonetheless, is instantly named within the Bible.

The warfare is nearly utterly out of sight of the observer driving on the best of pestilence. Femine wears a sulfur-yellow garment and holds a sword. On the proper edge, loss of life rides victoriously on his horse. His head is topped with a laurel wreath. His efficiency is harking back to medieval Triumph of Loss of life representations. On his saddle blanket the 4 letters are ALEP, stands for the Greek phrase aleptos (invincible, invulnerable). Beneath the group town, on which the pestilence spreads hearth resembles the architectural options and panorama of a Tuscan city.

Böcklin created the portray a couple of years earlier than his loss of life in Italy, the place he lived since 1895. At the moment he had many issues like sickness, misfortunes and lack of cash, so it was a private interpretation of damaging powers. Dissatisfied with the portray, he described it as “already unsuccessful”
