Augustus Leopold Egg’s ‘The Lifetime of Buckingham’ depicts a fictional second within the debauched, roguish lifetime of George Villiers (1628–1687), 2nd Duke of Buckingham (seated on the heart, sporting white). Though the scene is invented, the merrymakers and courtesans depicted across the desk (amongst them King Charles II, to Buckingham’s proper) had been characters the duke would have personally recognized and had been acquainted to Victorian audiences who delighted within the cautionary story of extra.
