The Baroque manor home at Milkel, close to Dresden, is depicted from its rear backyard in an environment of deep calm. Whereas nature’s fecundity is illuminated by the moon, two home windows glow softly, revealing a human presence—the signal of somebody awake late at evening. Carus wrote that “supreme actuality is manifest each inwardly, by means of the rational thoughts, and outwardly, by means of nature,” a duality represented on this portray by lamplight and moonlight.
