Childe Hassam along with his spouse returned to the US from France in 1889. Hassam discovered a studio condominium at Fifth Avenue and 17th Road. The trendy avenue was traveled at the moment by horse-drawn carriages and trolleys.
Hassam proclaimed within the early 1890’s : “New York is probably the most stunning metropolis on the earth. There isn’t any boulevard in all Paris that compares to our personal Fifth Avenue … the typical American nonetheless fails to understand the fantastic thing about his personal nation.” As New York’s structure modified, with skyscrapers supplanting stately mansions, the artist lamented an easier time when gracious horse-drawn carriages ferried folks up and down Fifth Avenue.
