Painters Work Gerrit van Honthorst (1592-1656): The Live performance, 1623, oil on canvas, 123.5 x 205 cm, Nationwide Gallery of Artwork, Washington DC
Gerrit van Honthorst’s ‘The Live performance’ depicts a gaggle of colorfully attired singers and musicians as they bend ahead, absolutely engaged, to observe the musical scores laid out on a big, tapestry-covered desk.
A bearded live performance grasp, wearing a black trimmed wine-colored doublet, guides them by pointing the bow of his bass viol at notes in one of many books. So shut are the musicians to the entrance of the image airplane that their joyous music appears to pour into the viewer’s house. Behind this group, a cheerful younger man raises his glass in celebration whereas he concurrently locations his finger over his mouth to induce the viewer to hear quietly to the melodious sounds of this musical ensemble. Two different smiling background figures on the far proper add to the festive character of the scene.
The work has a classicizing high quality that separates it from his strongly Caravaggist works, a stylistic attribute that turns into more and more sturdy over the course of his profession, significantly in work he made for the Dutch courtroom. Honthorst’s classicism, evident within the even mild that floods the scene, is obvious in his balanced composition of singers and musicians arrayed behind a desk located parallel to the image airplane. The readability of the easily modelled, barely idealized figures speaks to that very same creative impulse.
Its life-size scale and its fastidiously crafted and thoughtfully conceived composition point out past any doubt that this masterpiece was a commissioned work, in all probability made for a courtly patron in The Hague. The massive pink and inexperienced Usak Star carpet, imported from western Anatolia, fastidiously rendered to point each the four-leaf clover design and the nubs of the pile, was an costly desk protecting of a mode historically supposed for a Sultan’s courtroom.
The fantastically conceived and costly musical devices, together with a bass viol, violin, lute and bandora with a gilded figurehead, have been of a kind performed in courtly settings.
