Jupiter and Semele depicts a second from the classical delusion of the mortal girl Semele, mom of the god Dionysus, and her lover, Jupiter, the king of the gods. She was treacherously suggested by the goddess Juno, Jupiter’s spouse, to ask him to seem to her in all his divine splendor. He obliged, however, in so doing, caused her violent loss of life by his divine thunder and lightning.
