These mirthful males are members of a chamber of rhetoric, a kind of dramatic and literary society widespread all through the Dutch Republic. These teams carried out performs, tableau vivants, and poetry readings. At left, the group’s orator reads a paper titled Lof Liet (Tune of Reward), whereas the poet who composed the verse seems to be on over his shoulder. Reverse, a critic listens pensively whereas a jester provokes laughter from onlookers. Many artists have been members of such societies. Whereas it’s not recognized if Steen himself belonged, he often embraced components of stage efficiency, theatricality, and poetry in his artwork. (philamuseum.org)
