Painters Work José de Ribera (Jusepe de Ribera) : La Trinidad; (The Trinity) , c.1635, oil on canvas, 181 x 226 cm, Museo del Prado, Madrid

The Trinity reveals Ribera´s confidence in his pictorial prospects. The tragedy of the scene is emphasised by way of gentle and a luxurious palette. The bluish cadaver of Christ, marked by blood that runs down his facet, staining his loincloth and shroud, contrasts with the hieratic look of God the Father, who reveals us his useless Son, accompanied by the dove of the Holy Ghost. This work´s message, Christ´s loss of life and struggling for Humanity, is very clear. There may be one other, barely completely different, model of this work on the Monastery of El Escorial. I believe this portray is essentially the most spectacular one among the many ‘Ribera’s in Prado. It’s so vivid, virtually alive, too dramatic! It is extremely onerous to go away it to succeed in – my favorite- ‘El Greco’s that are solely a few meters away!
