When Pierre Puvis de Chavannes’ Dream was offered on the Salon des Artistes Français in 1883, {the catalogue} described its topic as: The Dream! “Love, Glory and Wealth seem to him in his sleep”. On a transparent moonlit evening, a younger man, in all probability a traveller because the bundle at his facet suggests, has fallen asleep by a tree. Three younger girls come to him in a dream, flying although the starry sky: the primary, with roses in her palms, suggests Love, the second is brandishing the laurel wreath of Glory, whereas the third is strewing the cash of Fortune. The panorama is sketched in with an amazing financial system of means. The shapes are extremely simplified and painted in broad zones of strong color.

Puvis de Chavannes used a slender vary of muted colors brightened solely by the crescent moon. On this easel portray, he has utilized the plastic language of the massive ornamental compositions for which he was famend.
