This work was executed whereas Rossetti and different artists had been adorning the Oxford Union with medievalist murals. In Oxford, Rossetti noticed Jane Burden, later Mrs William Morris, and instantly requested her to pose for him. She is the mannequin for Princess Sabra, threading a lock of her hair by St George’s helmet.
The claustrophobic composition is attribute of a lot of Rossetti’s work at the moment. Sabra’s embrace of an armoured determine, enmeshing him together with her hair, and St George’s distracted gaze trace at Rossetti’s dilemma of being concerned with Elizabeth Siddall, whom Rossetti married in 1860, however feeling a powerful attraction for Jane Morris.
