The Chillon Fortress is located on the sting of Lake Geneva a number of miles away from La Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland the place Courbet lived in exile from 1873 till the tip of his life. On the time, the Fortress was a well known and ceaselessly visited vacationer vacation spot, because the fortress’s historical past and dramatic setting on a promontory overlooking the lake had made it a favourite topic in illustrated journey books, topological prints and postcards.
Courbet painted the Fortress many occasions throughout his exile in Switzerland and there are a number of variations of the current composition. This view of the outside of the fortress, a Roman fortress that was expanded within the eleventh century, allowed the artist to play with the floor of the stone of the large architectural exterior, the extent of the water of Lake Geneva and the massiveness of the French Alps rising within the background. Maybe these components reminded the homesick artist of the rocky outcroppings of the panorama within the environs of Ornans, and the waves lapping towards the partitions of the fortress of his paysages de mer executed in his heyday of the 1860s.
