The portray was most likely painted shortly after Holbein’s return to Basel from England in 1528. Based mostly on an entry within the Amerbach stock of 1587, it’s believed to indicate his spouse, Elsbeth (born Binzenstock, and beforehand spouse of the deceased tanner Ulrich Schmid), whom he had married in 1519.
