Painters Work Self-Portrait as a Painter (Self-Portrait with Darkish Felt Hat on the Easel), Paris, September – November 1886, Oil on canvas, 46.5 x 38.5 cm, Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam
After his final self-portrait (our earlier publish), this is among the earliest self-portraits painted by Van Gogh – and the primary through which he portrayed himself as an artist. He stands at his subject easel, holding his palette. After greater than 5 years of follow within the Netherlands and Antwerp, he was wanting to make his identify as a painter in Paris.
The oblong palette is roofed with splotches of paint; each is a pure, unmixed color. On the high is a small jar of turpentine for thinning the paint. There are two holes within the palette: in a single we see Van Gogh’s thumb and within the different two brushes. (vangoghmuseum.nl)
